Builder Blitz
In 2008 K. Hovnanian Homes and Current Builders joined building industry professionals across the county in support of Habitat for Humanity’s second national Home Builders Blitz, May 31 to June 7. Both local builders joined local Habitat for Humanity South Palm Beach County to raise the roof on two homes located at 641 and 643 SW 6th Avenue in Delray Beach as part of the national build. The acquisition of the property was a collaborative effort between the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, the Delray Beach Community Land Trust, and Habitat for Humanity South Palm Beach County.

There were many organizations and individuals who came together to make the project a huge success:
Home Builders Blitz engages professional builders to make affordable housing available in their communities by donating time, building materials and subcontractor services to build homes in just one week. During this year’s build, approximately 1,000 building industry professionals donated homebuilding materials as well as completely constructed homes from start to finish, building more than 250 homes in partnership with 110 Habitat affiliates throughout 34 states. The accelerated build served to house more than 1,000 people.
The concept behind Habitat’s Home Builders Blitz originated in 2002 with Tom Gipson, a professional home builder in Raleigh, N.C., who supported Habitat for Humanity’s efforts to eliminate poverty housing in his community. Gipson rallied other local builders for an accelerated build, which was so successful that Habitat for Humanity International decided to promote it as a nationwide build. Since the concept’s inception, the professional homebuilders industry has assisted Habitat’s mission by building in excess of 780 homes.
