Circle of Friends

Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County’s very identity as a Christian ministry calls us to model the life of Jesus Christ who welcomed all people.  Habitat for Humanity invites people of all faiths and no faith to help us with the enormous task of ending poverty housing.  The Circle of Friends concept acknowledges the broad ethnic base that makes up our community and links partner families to mentors, role models, supportive institutions, and influential business players within and outside the communities.

This is not a new program. Our affiliate began the program in 1996 and it was originally known as the Circle of Twelve.  It consisted of 12 local church congregations, primarily of the Christian faith, who came together in partnership with our affiliate to build two homes that were delivered to partner families for Christmas 1996.  The original Circle of Twelve were: Advent Lutheran, Boca West United Methodist, Ebenezer Baptist, First Presbyterian, First United Methodist, Friendship Missionary, Glades Presbyterian, Macedonia A.M.E., St Gregory’s Episcopal, St Joan of Arc Catholic, St Paul’s Lutheran, and West Boca Presbyterian.

The concept was expanded in 1997, to be known as the Circle of Friends, to represent all faiths to better reflect our community make-up. The Circle of Friends completed two more homes in 1997 and four homes in 1998.  In 2000 we delivered five homes with an additional two homes under construction, but unfortunately, a lack in staffing led to the demise of the Circle of Friends in 2000.

By joining the Circle of Friends, members will raise the resources to finance a Habitat home, and build the home in partnership with the family purchasing it.  It is a unique opportunity for people to experience their faith in new and exciting ways:

  • Help people see the spirit of God at work outside the four walls of the church or synagogue
  • Help build the church or synagogue.  Habitat for Humanity is a widely recognized and respected Christian organization.  A Habitat project can be just the spark that gets people excited about working in Christian community
  • Help a church or synagogue fulfill its mission to minister to persons who are in need
  • Attract new members and bring energy
  • Enable individuals to experience spiritual growth
  • Be a means for identifying and developing leaders within a church or synagogue
